The Roaring 20's

I hope you all have had a great start to your week; I know I sure have! Over the past 2 weeks, our 5th graders have been learning about the 1920's. Our standard states that the students should be able to identify five famous people (Louis Armstrong, Langston Hughes, Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh, and Babe Ruth), and they should be able to tell each person's contribution and how it changed the culture of America. These  one measly standard covers all of this and the Harlem Renaissance. And who can resist the urge to teach about silent movies, flappers, and so on?! Not I!

Although this isn't my first year teaching 5th grade Social Studies, I still find myself looking for new materials to use to teach the lessons. As I was looking for something to overview the materials this year for the 1920's, I found myself wishing for a QR code activity. So....I decided to whip something up! My kids had so much fun completing the activity and watching the videos!

Our Social Studies time is split into two sessions due to our lunchtime; I practically had kids begging me to get back to the classroom so that they could work on their activity! Which teacher doesn't want their students to beg them to do something?!

Once the activity was completed, I decided that I'd pair this activity up with a few others that I already had to go along with the 1920's era and post it on my TpT store. If you're interested, click here to find a direct link to it.

These activities proved to help students master the standard because the majority of them passed the test with flying colors!!

Sunday Scoop

Hey y'all! I'm so excited to finally be able to blog again! For some unknown reason, I haven't been able to upload any photos to blogger...you may  need to brace yourself for a blog overload from Teaching Lane because I have SO much I want to share!
Anyway, I'm linking up with TeachingTrio to bring you the "Sunday Scoop".

3 HAVE TOs:
Laundry and meal planning...need I say more? I think that's pretty much neverending for moms! :)
My husband and I also have to take our children to see my father-in-law later this evening because he is leaving to work out of town for this week. We have a very close knit family; when I say close knit, I seriously mean it. My children are blessed to have both sets of grandparents living within a 5 minutes radius from us. My parents and Kevin's parents get along also. Trust me when I say it makes life so much easier...most of the time!

2 HOPE Tos:
Last week I noticed that several of my students are still struggling with homophones, especially to/two/too and there/their/they're. Can you guess what I'm going to focus on this week along with everything else we are working on? Yep, you guessed it! Homophones. I decided that I'd like to do something fun with them to review, so we are going to do a homophone carousel activity and play Homophone Bingo. The only downfall to playing Homophone Bingo? I am still in the process of creating it! I'm going to have to be very busy this week in order to get in finished and prepared in time to use it! (Be sure to check it out in my TpT store sometime at the beginning of this week!)

I also hope to begin a new blog post for sometime toward the beginning of this week. I haven't blogged in over a week because I've been fighting with blogger to upload my images. I'm not sure why it's fixed, or how it's fixed, but I'm not going to complain!

1 HAPPY TO:
I am actually sitting in my girls' room playing with Barbies and talking to my oldest daughter, MaryBeth, right now. She and I have been able to spend lots of time talking, laughing, and watching movies this weekend. I am trying to put other things aside so that I can cherish this years with all three of my children because I know that they are going to grow up in the blink of an eye! (Putting things aside means that I have many LATE nights so that I can work on TpT stuff!)

Hope you are having a very HAPPY Sunday and getting some relaxation in before we begin yet another week as educators!

Thanks for reading,

You Oughta Know Blog Hop-January

What You Oughta Know About Using 5 Gallon Buckets
in the Classroom

What do 5 gallon buckets and a classroom have in common? No, they can't serve as a place to hide during a full moon week at school...but they can serve as some really awesome seating options for your students!

At the beginning of this school year, I realized that my classroom was in need of a serious facelift. I begin to search for ideas that would be easy to do and that my 5th graders would enjoy...I set my heart on using crates to create new "stools" for my kiddos. As I begin to collect supplies, it hit me! Why not use 5 gallon buckets? I was so proud of what I thought was an original idea...however, I have since seen it on Pinterest. Either way, original idea or not, I think using 5 gallon buckets is a classroom must-have (especially for older students!).

My father-in-law works for a construction company, so he has 5 gallon buckets lying around everywhere. I was fortunate that I was able to get all 6 of my buckets for FREE! Who doesn't love free?! Next, I bought some cute fabric that was on the thicker side ( I wanted it to be able to withstand wear and tear--so far, so good...). Below are the steps I took to create my buckets:

1) I used spray paint for plastic items to paint my buckets.
2) Next, I used poly-fiberfill and fabric to cover the lids of the buckets. I simply hot glued the fabric around the fiberfill. (hot glue=teacher's best friend) I tried to push the fabric into the grooves of the lid. In the picture below of the lid, you can see that it looks much neater if the fabric is pushed into the grooves. As I completed each lid, I found that putting hot glue around the groove, covering it with the fabric, and then quickly putting it on bucket with a little weight helped the fabric stay a lot snugger.

That's it! In a total of about an hour, I had some super cute and really cheap new seats for my classroom! I have been amazed at how well-loved these seats have been too! My students nearly fight over who is going to sit on a bucket. In fact, I have had to issue some "bucket bans" when things get out of hand! (You can tell from my pictures that my buckets have been quite LOVED!)

Other than being super cute, I have found that these can also serve as storage in my classroom. I have a couple of students who need to be seated away from other students at different tables in my classroom. Rather than having students leave their materials on my tables and make them look cluttered up, they simply lift the lid and place their belongings that would usually be housed in a desk in my room in their assigned bucket. (These would also be great to use to house small group supplies at a teacher's station.)

I'll tell you, what started out as wanting to give my classroom a facelift, has turned into a classroom hack that everyone should try! I am planning to add more buckets to my classroom next year, simply because everyone loves them--the students especially!

Now that you've read my, "You Oughta Know" blog, hop on over to read other helpful hints! Don't forget to leave them some love too! (By the way, I'd love to have you follow my TpT store, my Pinterest boards, and blog...)

Sunday Scoop

Good (late) Sunday evening! I'm linking up with TeachingTrio once again to give you "The Sunday Scoop". I don't know about you, but I have had a wonderful weekend! This weekend was extra special because my birthday was Saturday...we celebrated by going to the Cheesecake Factory! This was my first ever trip there....and let me add, I was not disappointed! I ordered the Pineapple Upside Down Cheesecake, and it was delicious! We also did a little shopping and I purchased a new pair of earrings and two new bracelets! Here's the scoop on the rest of my weekend:

I have to grade papers and fold laundry...two things that are never-ending for teachers! I also need to get to work a little early in the morning (this is definitely not an easy task for me!) because I need to gather lesson plans for one of my very dear friends. Please keep her and her family in your prayers as she lost her granddaughter today. My heart breaks for them.

As far as my hopes, I hope to get my 1920's bundle set posted within the next couple of days. I'll be sure to blog all about it when I do...I've already tried the task cards out in my room, and the kids LOVED it! There's nothing like students being engaged, especially a room of nearly 50 students! I have pictures that I'll be sure to share as soon as I post and blog about the product. I also hope to go to bed at a decent time to night...this is something else that isn't easy for me; I'm such a night owl!

Lastly, I am happy to offer a FLASH FREEBIE in celebration of my birthday. It is only free through tomorrow, so if you know anyone who might enjoy a free set of task cards about subordinating and coordinating conjunctions, let them know! The task cards are actually a portion of a bundle set in my TpT store.

Well, that's my weekend. I hope yours was as lovely as mine!

Thanks for stopping by!

A Few of My Favorite Things...

Hi all! Happy Hump Day! I think it's safe to say that we all agree that returning to school from Christmas Break and a full moon week is some form of a cruel joke! It has been interesting in my classroom this week for sure!

I'm linking up with TeachingTrio again for another linky. This time, it's all about a few of my favorite things. So, here goes...

My first favorite thing would be my three precious children. The Lord has blessed my husband and I with what we consider to be our perfect combination. We have two daughters and a son. They keep us on our toes for sure!

Another one of my favorite things is a  novel that I aim to read with my 5th graders every year. The Late, Great Dick Hart is a story about two best friends that are separated by death, but then they are reunited in the fifth dimension where they are able to...I can't finish my sentence without spoiling the book for anyone interested in reading it. It is a fabulous read aloud. My students always laugh out loud and beg to read more when it's time to move on to the next subject in class. I can usually count on them to give a huge sigh when we are finished reading the book because they enjoy so much! If you are an upper grades teacher, this should be on our read-aloud list.

Lastly, I am not a coffee drinker (I know, I know...many teachers are!). I do not enjoy the taste, nor the smell of coffee. Trust me, I wish I did! My go to drink for caffeine is McDonald's Sweet Tea. I know it has to be loaded with tons of calories (if you know that actual number of calories, please don't spoil this for me by sharing...lol). There's no telling how many dollar bills I have given at the drive-thru in exchange for a large cup of this yumminess!

These three things make my heart smile! I'd love to hear about some of your favorite things! Leave a comment below to share.

Sunday Scoop

teachingtrio.blogspot.com

Twas the night before Christmas Break ended and all the teachers were ________. You fill in the blank...the last night of a break is always so bittersweet because I have mixed emotions. On one hand, I'm ready to see my school babies, but on the other hand, I'm wanting to stay home just one more day with my real babies. As always though, break ends and reality returns--a busy, chaotic life. :)
This is my very first link up! I'm excited to link up with Teaching Trio for this exciting step in the blogging world. Be sure to check them out as well (after reading my blog, of course!).
So, without further ado, here's what I've done...well, planned to do today!

Organization is something that I've always loved, but I struggle with this concept majorly! I know that I'm always in a better mood when my house is in order. One thing that I started this school year to help with organization is picking our clothes out for the week. It takes me about 25-30 minutes to complete the process (ok, maybe a little more for my clothes...), but once it is done, I don't have to worry about it for the rest of the week! I'm always looking for small things that will help me be more organized! I've also worked on cleaning my house for the week, but that will really have to wait until "the 3" are asleep.

I am still in the process of entering my final grades...I am having a hard time getting motivated because I'm trying to savor these last few moments before returning to the real world. I guess it'll be a late night tonight. I'll feel the effects tomorrow during my half-day training!

I was also so excited to go to Sam's Club with a close friend and five of our six children (we have three children each). People look at us like we're crazy with our gaggle of children following us around, but they are well-behaved! I am all about bargain hunting and saving money, so Sam's Club is right up my alley!

Hopefully, entering grades will not take too long so that I can begin working on a new product for my TpT store! For now, I'm off to enjoy my last few minutes of break!

That was my Sunday; I'd love to hear all about yours!

Until next time,
Elaine, Teaching Lane

A New Adventure...

Hi all! I'm so excited to begin this brand new journey in the "blogging world"! This is my very first blog post on my new blog...eeekkk!!! Let's see how this goes!

First things first. Let me formally introduce myself. My name is Elaine White. I have been married to my awesome husband for nearly 9 years. Together we have three beautiful children; MaryBeth, EmmaKate, and Kace. They are our miracles sent straight from Heaven.

This is my 9th year teaching, but my 8th year in my current position as a 5th grade teacher. I love my job! After working in the same grade for as long as I have, I feel completely comfortable with the curriculum that I teach. Do I have bad days? Absolutely! Do I ever have days that I'm ready for a change? Oh yeah! Do I love my job most of the time? Yes!

My passion is English Language Arts. This subject area encompasses two of my favorite things: reading and writing! I have always been one who really enjoyed writing. I love to see the growth that my 5th graders demonstrate from the beginning of the year to the end. Some of them really sprout wings throughout the year!

Some people may be wondering why I've decided to pursue this new journey...the answer is simply because I've always been one of those teachers that likes to create my own resources because I can't find one that fits the needs of my students or my wants. Instead of searching for hours, I usually spend some time creating what I want and then put it to use in my classroom. And, just in case you are wondering, the answer is no, they do not always achieve what I was going for with my students. You live, you learn, you try again!

Now to the really, I mean REALLY good stuff! I want to invite you all to follow my TeachersPayTeachers store: Teaching Lane. I am relatively new to the TpT world, so bare with me. It's going to be like fine wine, it'll get better with time!

You can also find me on Facebook! I'd love to have you follow me!

Thanks for reading!
